Navigating today’s billing challenges

Wednesday, June 24, 2026

Editor’s note: Edward Fabi, JD, and George Hollcraft will present “Mastering Modern-Day Billing Labyrinths: Difficult Patient Discharges and Health Sharing Programs” on day one of the 2026 Revenue Integrity Symposium, which will take place September 24–25 in Savannah, Georgia. Fabi is a registered in-house counsel at Sutter Health in Sacramento, California. Hollcraft is a revenue cycle analyst at Sutter Health in Sacramento, California. Download the 2026 RIS brochure to learn more about the event! Use NAHRI’s justification letter template as a guide to gain your organization’s support for attending.

Q: In what ways does your session challenge attendees to think outside the box?

Fabi and Hollcraft: Today's revenue cycle and revenue integrity universes involve multi-level and multi-factorial input and influences, such as new state laws, federal laws, political influences, etc.  Thinking only in a traditional, one-on-one linear fashion will unfortunately likely result in an organization operating at a disadvantage with both patients or third-party payers. Thinking outside the box is a must for any organization to thrive.

Q: What’s the biggest challenge in revenue integrity and/or revenue cycle right now? How does your session help tackle this?

Fabi and Hollcraft: Not knowing what you don't know. As one of the larger health systems in the nation, Sutter Health is able to see and experience a broad spectrum of revenue cycle issues.  Meeting and conferring with other leaders in our industry allows us to pass along these experiences and help close some of the gaps the healthcare industry may encounter.

Q: What’s one of the key pieces of information you would like people to take away from your session?

Fabi and Hollcraft: With so many different categories of payers, it is impossible to operate with top efficiency and accuracy if acting alone or with limited perspective.  Revenue integrity requires a team effort, from the front line admission staff, to the revenue professionals, to the attorneys that clarify and enforce. One of us is never as smart as all of us.

Q: What are you most excited about for this year’s conference?

Fabi and Hollcraft: The opportunity to deep dive into how the revenue cycle is an always-evolving proactive process and cross‑department collaboration and hear the new challenges and new innovations in the industry is well worth the cost for any organization to attend.

Q: What's a great piece of advice you've received regarding revenue integrity and/or revenue cycle? Or, what advice do you like to give people about revenue integrity and/or revenue cycle?

Fabi and Hollcraft: In today's frenetic revenue cycle environment the industry must create upstream processes to help catch downstream errors.
