The People Side of Autonomous Coding: Roles, Operations, and Change Management After Go-Live

Health systems have heard the case for autonomous coding. What they hear far less about is what happens after go-live: the team conversations, the workflow adjustments, and the months it takes before a new operational rhythm starts to feel normal.

This Fireside Chat brings together HIM and coding leaders from Intermountain Health and OSU Physicians for a candid peer-to-peer conversation about what that transition actually looks like from the inside. Drawing on firsthand experience across emergency department facility and professional fee coding in two distinct health system environments, these leaders will share what their teams went through and where things stand today.

The discussion will focus on three areas: how coding roles, career ladders, and team structures have evolved since go-live; what steady-state operations actually look like when autonomous coding is running at scale, including how exception-based workflows and quality oversight have changed in practice; and how these leaders navigated the change management challenges that surfaced before, during, and in the first year after implementation.
