Editor’s note: Sarah L. Goodman, MBA, CHCAF, COC, CHRI, CCP, FCS, will present “Compliant Charge Capture From Authorizations to Z-Codes” on day one of the 2024 Revenue Integrity Symposium (RIS), which will take place September 12–13 in Oak Brook, Illinois. Goodman is president/CEO and principal consultant for SLG, Inc., in Raleigh, North Carolina, and is a NAHRI Advisory Board member. Get an exclusive insider’s look at what RIS attendees will learn and experience at the event, discuss highlights from the agenda, and more during our upcoming free webinar on June 19! Use NAHRI’s justification letter template as a guide to gain your organization’s support for attending. Consider applying for the NAHRI Scholarship, which awards free registration to RIS (the application deadline is May 28).

Q: In what ways does your session challenge revenue integrity professionals to think outside the box?

Goodman: I believe my session’s unique "A to Z" approach to managing the chargemaster and addressing related topics, such as authorizations, National Correct Coding Initiative edits, and molecular diagnostic testing Z-code identifiers, will inspire attendees to think outside the box and be creative in tackling the many charge capture issues that may arise along their revenue integrity journey.

Q: What’s the biggest challenge in revenue integrity right now? How does your session help tackle this?

Goodman: Staying current with the various regulations and keeping the chargemaster up to date amidst system conversions, acquisitions, and other factors are a few of the greatest challenges for revenue integrity professionals. My session will highlight steps in mitigating these dilemmas.

Q: What’s one of the key pieces of information you would like people to take away from your session?

Goodman: In addition to taking away some of the latest revenue integrity advice and practical tips, I am hopeful that attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the benefits of leveraging a team approach and collaborating with professionals both internal and external to their organizations.

Q: What are you most excited about for this year’s topic? Or, what are you most excited about for this year’s conference?

Goodman: Every year, I look forward to catching up with colleagues and meeting new people, and this year is no exception, especially since RIS will be hosted in the Chicago area, one of my favorite places to visit. I cannot wait to see everyone and enjoy a slice of Chicago's iconic deep-dish pizza!

Q: What's a great piece of advice you've received regarding revenue integrity? Or, what advice do you like to give people about revenue integrity?

Goodman: I thought about this the other day. In our field, RIS is clearly an acronym for "Revenue Integrity Symposium," but it could also be an acronym for words of wisdom I have often heard and offer as inspiration to you all: "Be Responsive, Be Inquisitive, Be Supportive." See you in September!
