Reviewing 2025 CDM updates on the January 2025 NAHRI Quarterly Call

Wednesday, February 5, 2025

NAHRI members received association updates and learned about provisions in the 2025 Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS) and Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) final rules that impact the charge description master (CDM) during the January 2025 NAHRI Quarterly Call.

Association updates

The call opened with NAHRI Director Nicole Votta providing the latest association updates.

NAHRI is looking for feedback from revenue integrity professionals to learn how the association can best meet your needs in the coming years. Members and nonmembers are invited to complete the NAHRI Membership Survey by February 28. Survey respondents can opt into a giveaway. One NAHRI member will be randomly selected from among the respondents to win a free renewal in 2025 and one nonmember to win a free NAHRI membership. See the official contest rules for more information.

2025 Revenue Integrity Week will take place June 2-6. This year’s theme will be Your Recipe for Revenue Integrity Success! This event celebrates revenue integrity professionals and raises awareness of their contributions to the healthcare industry. Ahead of the event, NAHRI will release the 2025 Revenue Integrity Week toolkit, which includes activities, games, banners, a poster, and more. The 2025 State of the Revenue Integrity Industry Survey will launch in the coming weeks, and the survey data will be compiled into a report released during Revenue Integrity Week.

The 2025 Revenue Integrity Symposium  (RIS) will be held September 25-26, 2025, at the Westin Westminster in Westminster (Denver), Colorado. OPPS and MPFS highlights

Following the association updates, NAHRI Advisory Board members Sarah L. Goodman, MBA, CHCAF, COC, CHRI, CCP, FCS, and Kay Larsen, CHRI, shared insights on the 2025 OPPS and MPFS final rules, offering tips on how to best incorporate coding changes into the CDM. They also provided several suggestions for effective charge capture, monitoring, and implementation.

CMS finalized six new Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes (76014-16019) related to magnetic resonance safety in the 2025 MPFS final rule. The speakers urged revenue integrity professionals to review the introductory guidelines, code descriptors, parentheticals, and symbols for the codes to fully understand the codeset logic.

CMS also created two new HCPCS G-codes (G0537 and G0538) to report atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk assessment and risk management services. Goodman and Larsen recommended viewing the American College of Cardiology’s fillable-form ASCVD risk estimator tool and analysis on the use of these codes. Goodman reminded listeners that specific data must be captured, and the output of the risk estimator tool must include a 10-year estimate of the patient’s ASCVD risk.

Goodman and Larsen also discussed CDM considerations for new remote therapeutic monitoring and pass-through device provisions. In addition, they offered the following advice to revenue integrity professionals for updating the CDM:

  • Adhere to code descriptions
  • Report all billable units of service
  • Inactivate obsolete items and services
  • Analyze pricing to ensure it is sensible and defendable
  • Educate staff on new codes and other 2025 updates
