Q&A: Reporting observation hour prior to admission

Q: How do you report observation hours prior to an inpatient admission? Or do you report these?

A: We charge based upon the physician's order. Therefore, if the patient is in observation for 28 hours and then gets admitted, the claim would have charges based upon the orders and timing events.

Note: This question can be found in the billing and claims section on the NAHRI Forums where you can find answers to questions on a variety of topics from billing and claims to compliance to reimbursement.
