By Kim Cusson, CCS, CPC

The Revenue Integrity Symposium presents a great opportunity to not only learn but also to network with other individuals who are in the same role you are. It provides a forum in which to learn and understand how they are handling certain situations. This year’s conference, hosted by NAHRI, is taking place October 16–17 at the Wigwam Resort outside Phoenix, Arizona.

This year, I am looking forward to meeting new people, networking, and speaking. I am definitely looking forward to attending “One Size Does Not Fit All: Revenue Integrity Program Design Options” with Caroline Rader Znaniec, owner and consulting lead of Luna Healthcare Advisors LLC in Denton, Maryland.

My session, titled “Tick Tock You’re on the Clock: The 60-Day Provision,” is taking place on day two, October 17, 2–3:15 p.m. I will be co-presenting with Jennie Bryan, MBA, RHIA, CCS, a healthcare risk client-based associate manager for Crowe Healthcare Risk Consulting LLC, in Clayton, Missouri. Revenue integrity professionals have opportunities to identify situations in which overpayments may have been received. Professionals must understand the regulation and how to apply in their world. So, this session will provide a general overview of CMS’ final rule on reporting and returning of overpayments, which implements the Affordable Care Act’s 60-day report and return provision for self-identified overpayments, which were effective May 14, 2016.

I am also excited about the location of this year’s conference. Phoenix is a beautiful place, so I can’t wait to take in the scenery and sites. I am even considering coming early to attend the New Mexico Balloon festival.

Editor’s note: Cusson is a healthcare risk client-based associate manager for Crowe Healthcare Risk Consulting LLC, in Clayton, Missouri. Cusson has more than 30 years of healthcare experience including more than 20 years of experience in auditing, hospital postacute care consulting, and physician coding and billing. She has also held positions as billing director, healthcare compliance manager, and outpatient coding manager.
