Note from the Associate Editor: Excited to join NAHRI

by Kevin Duffy

Hello everyone!

My name is Kevin Duffy, and I’m the new associate editor here at NAHRI. This is my first job in the world of healthcare and, unsurprisingly, it’s been a little bit of a whirlwind.

In December, my first month on the job, most of my days were spent reading one sentence at a time, googling the six acronyms that appeared in said sentence, and then reading it again. By January, I could recognize at least a few acronyms. Progress.

I come to NAHRI after 10 years in sports journalism. I began my career working for my hometown newspaper, the (Danbury, Connecticut) News-Times, and later moved to Massachusetts to write for MassLive and then the Boston Herald. It was a blast, but after a decade I decided I needed a change.

That brings me to my current role with NAHRI as well as HCPro, where I’ll handle several assignments. In addition to writing the monthly Briefings on HIPAA newsletter featured on revenuecycleadvisor.com, I’ll be updating the NAHRI website, connecting with you all through social media, leading the quarterly calls, and serving as the point of contact for NAHRI’s Workgroups and Local and Regional Chapters.

The latter assignment is what most excites me. Throughout my journalism career, my favorite aspect of the job was talking to people and learning about their passions and skills. I suspect it’ll be much of the same in this role.

I’m looking forward to learning about your roles as revenue integrity professionals and getting to know you all on a personal level, too!

As for me? Well, I have always loved to write. I’m still passionate about sports, although I do a lot more watching than playing these days. A few knee injuries derailed what would have been a truly mediocre rec league basketball career (probably for the best). I’m starting to get back into running after taking a few years off, and that’s been enjoyable. Beyond that, I value quality time with my family and friends. And that’s about it on my end.

I’m much more interested in getting to know all of you (and if you’d like to be featured in an upcoming member spotlight story in the NAHRI Journal, I’d love to hear from you). I apologize in advance if I am unfamiliar with a revenue integrity term or concept. I’m learning on the fly. Each week I am becoming a little more knowledgeable.

Ultimately, my goal is to help you any way I can, so always feel free to reach out. Hopefully we’ll have some fun along the way.
